Pixel 10 Review: Google Is Quietly Beating Everyone on AI and the Camera Proves It

The Wall Street Journal said it. I am saying it too. Google is beating Apple on smartphone AI and the Pixel 10 series is the proof. Here is why this phone deserves more attention than it gets.

Welcome back to TechKitchen. Gus here.

The Wall Street Journal ran a headline that said Google is beating Apple on smartphone AI. Bold claim. But after spending real time with the Pixel 10 series, I have to tell you they were not wrong.

Google has been playing a long game with the Pixel line and it is starting to pay off in a way that the spec sheets do not fully capture. This is not a flashy phone. It is a phone built around doing things that matter to you every single day, and doing them better than anything else in its class.

Let me break it down.

The Tensor G5 Chip: This Is Where It Starts

Everything about the Pixel 10 series runs through the new Google Tensor G5 chip. And the numbers are real. A TPU with up to 60% more computing power, a CPU that is 34% faster than the previous generation. Google built this chip specifically to run their most advanced AI on-device, not in the cloud, not with a server round trip, right on your phone.

What that means in practice: AI features that actually respond instantly. Live translations, photo processing, Gemini conversations, all of it happens fast enough that you stop noticing there is AI involved and just notice that things work. That is the sign of a well-executed chip.

The Camera System: Practically Unfair

I will be straight with you. The Pixel camera system is the reason most people buy this phone and Google did not let anyone down here.

On the base Pixel 10, you are getting a triple camera system with a 5x telephoto lens and Super Res Zoom up to 20x. On a non-Pro phone. That used to be a Pro-only thing and Google just put it in the standard model. Point and shoot on this thing produces results that would have required a DSLR five years ago.

On the Pixel 10 Pro, it gets serious. 50MP wide, 48MP ultrawide, 48MP telephoto. 100x Pro Zoom. 42MP front camera with autofocus. 8K video with Night Sight Video and Video Boost stabilization. If you are a content creator and you are not looking at the Pixel 10 Pro as your primary camera, you are missing out.

The feature that surprised me most is Camera Coach. It uses Gemini AI to actually read the scene in real time and suggest better angles, better lighting, and better modes. It is like having a photography assistant in your pocket that is not annoying about it. It makes suggestions, you decide. Simple.

Auto Best Take is the one people sleep on. You take a few group photos and the phone automatically combines them into one where everyone looks their best. No more "send me the one where I look okay." The phone just figures it out.

Magic Cue: The Feature Nobody Else Has

This is the one that made me stop and pay attention.

Magic Cue is Google's all-new proactive AI feature. It sits in the background and surfaces relevant information exactly when you need it without you asking. Your friend texts asking where you are meeting for dinner? Magic Cue finds the restaurant from your calendar and lets you share it with one tap. Calling your airline? It pulls up your flight details right on the call screen automatically.

No other phone does this. Not Samsung, not Apple. This is Google leveraging years of AI research and their on-device Tensor chip to make your phone actually anticipate what you need. In daily use it feels like the phone is paying attention to your life in a way that is helpful rather than creepy.

Gemini Is Everywhere and That Is a Good Thing

Gemini Live lets you have natural hands-free conversations with your phone. You can share your screen, share your camera feed, send files and YouTube videos into the conversation. Need to figure out why your bike gears are not shifting? Point the camera at it and have a back-and-forth conversation about what you see.

The Pixel 10 Pro also comes with a free year of Google AI Pro, a $239 value, which unlocks deeper Gemini features in Gmail, Docs, and includes 2TB of cloud storage. That is a real bonus that most people are not factoring into the price comparison.

The Display: 3,300 Nits Is Not Marketing

Pixel 10 Pro has a 6.3-inch Super Actua display with 3,300-nit peak brightness. Pixel 10 Pro XL goes to 6.8 inches with the same brightness. The base Pixel 10 runs a 6.3-inch Actua display at 3,000 nits.

I took the Pixel 10 Pro outside in direct Kitchener afternoon sunlight and the screen was fully readable without maxing the brightness manually. At 3,300 nits, it is brighter than almost everything else you can buy. The Material 3 Expressive design update also makes the interface feel more personal with better themes, animations, and customizable quick settings.

Pixelsnap: Google Finally Has Their MagSafe

Google introduced Pixelsnap this generation, their magnetic technology built into every Pixel 10 device. Snap on Qi2 wireless chargers, stands, grips, wallets, and a whole ecosystem of accessories. Up to 25W wireless charging speed. This closes a real gap that Pixel has had versus iPhone's MagSafe ecosystem for years.

Battery: 24 Plus Hours and Extreme Battery Saver Goes to 120

Regular use gets you over 24 hours. If you flip on Extreme Battery Saver, the Pixel 10 series can stretch to 120 hours. I consistently got through a full heavy day without watching the battery icon. The Pixel 10 Pro XL charges to 70% in about 30 minutes wired.

Security That Actually Protects You

Scam Detection uses AI to identify suspicious calls and texts in real time and alerts you before you get deeper into the conversation. Theft Detection auto-locks the phone if a theft is detected. Satellite SOS connects to emergency services even without cellular or Wi-Fi. Car Crash Detection calls emergency services if you are in an accident.

And 7 years of OS, security, and Pixel Drop updates. Google adds new features through Pixel Drops every few months so the phone you buy today is genuinely better a year from now.

The Build: Spacecraft-Grade and IP68

Spacecraft-grade aluminum frame, Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2, IP68 water and dust resistance. The Pixel 10 Pro has a silky matte glass back with polished metal accents and a diamond-cut camera bar. It is a premium build that feels as good in hand as it looks.

Colors for Pixel 10: Indigo, Frost, Lemongrass, and Obsidian. Pixel 10 Pro: Moonstone, Jade, Obsidian, and Porcelain. The Indigo is genuinely one of the best looking phones I have held this year.

Who This Phone Is For

This is for you if

- You want the best point-and-shoot camera experience available on any phone.

- You care about AI features that are actually useful in your daily life, not just impressive in a demo.

- You want a phone that gets better over time with 7 years of updates.

- You are a content creator who needs serious video and photo capabilities.

Look elsewhere if

- You are deep in the Samsung ecosystem and rely on Samsung-specific features.

- You want maximum hardware specs on paper. The Tensor G5 is excellent but the Pro starts at $999, which puts it against some fierce competition.

Final take

The Pixel 10 series is the most complete version of what Google has been building toward for years. The camera is exceptional across every model. Magic Cue is genuinely unlike anything else. The Tensor G5 makes all the AI fast enough to actually use. And seven years of updates means this phone stays relevant longer than almost anything else you can buy.

The Wall Street Journal called it. Google is beating Apple on smartphone AI. After using this phone, I am not arguing with that.
